Summer Ready: How To Stay Healthy Through The Summer
April 7, 2021
The warm, long and lazy days are here to stay! It is time to step outdoors or travel places with family or friends. Apart from the opportunities to have fun, the summer season brings along a list of health issues such as heat strokes, dehydration, diarrhoea, skin rashes and typhoid to name a few. That’s why people of all age groups need to take care of their health, especially during the summer months. But don’t allow possible health concerns to come in the way of having fun and spending quality time with your loved ones. Here are a few tips that you can follow to stay healthy through the summer season.
Drink Plenty of Fluids: Staying hydrated is essential, especially during the summer months, as the body loses a lot of fluids through sweat. You should drink at least 8 glasses of water to stay hydrated and energetic throughout the day. Avoid having carbonated drinks, caffeine and alcohol as they can leave you feeling dehydrated. Remember to always carry a bottle of water when stepping out, as drinking unfiltered water can cause diseases like cholera, hepatitis A or E, typhoid and diarrhoea.
Eat Mindfully: You must also pay close attention to your diet and be mindful of your food choices. Maintaining a healthy diet will help you stay fit and cool during the summer months. Avoid eating out and start including fruits in your diet. You can choose from a variety of seasonal fruits available. Make salads, yoghurt, leafy vegetables, fruit juices, melons, strawberries and cucumbers a part of your diet. These food items will provide you with the nutrients and minerals your body requires during the hotter months.
At no cost, you should indulge in spicy food, as it can create acidity. This happens because your body is already heated up internally as well, and having spicy food aggravates your body further.
Stay Active: Apart from eating and drinking appropriately, you should be active as well. Make outdoor or indoor activities a part of your day. You can go for a morning or evening walk, cycling, go to the gym or enrol yourself for a yoga session. There are endless choices where you can enjoy and stay active even during the hot summer days. But pick the cooler parts of the day to step out or workout and leave the hotter time during the day to stay in and relax. Try to indulge in physical activities for at least 30 minutes a day.
Wear Light Clothing: Whether you step out or stay indoors, you must wear light coloured and cotton fabric clothes during the summer months. Light colours are a poor absorber of heat and are the perfect choice for the summer months. Cotton fabric helps in absorbing the sweat, and it allows it to evaporate quickly. Not just that, ensure you wear loose-fitting and lightweight clothes throughout the summer season.
Take Care of your Hair and Skin: The harmful UV rays of the sun can cause damage to the hair and skin. So, you must pay attention to both and have an appropriate routine in place. Ensure a good sunscreen is part of your skincare regimen. Wash your hair more frequently in the summer months, as you sweat more than any other season.
Taking care of your overall well being during the summer season is vital, and these tips will help you stay safe and healthy during the scorching summer months. However, if you or a loved one experience any discomfort or health concerns, please rush to the nearest hospital.
